Completing our Business Sale – An Emotional Rollercoaster!

Tomorrow we are completing our business sale…

Waiting for a deal to complete the deal, all parties working hard to finalise documents, all items settled and agreed in principle. The weeks and months running up to today have been a roller coaster. Minor items seem to be deal breakers, the buyer gets cold feet and sees problems and ghosts. They box at shadows, box the ghosts, you are also one of the ghosts! Each day brings up something new, why this why that, “we are surprised”…!

You hold on tight, you live on little sleep, each night is fitful with wild thoughts. What is the other-side up to, will they go ahead, can we trust them, will they complete the deal or pull out? The other-side have taken to texting at midnight, do you answer it or even look at it? The deal is getting complicated and very involved, what about this, what about that? What does this mean – I need to talk to someone who has been through this? My friends said it would be easy, how would they know, they have not walked this path, they don’t really know. Lucky I do have someone to turn to, who is really understands what is going on and will ensure that the deal is completed. He also told me that “a deal dies a thousand deaths and is only consummated once”, boy was he spot on!

Tomorrow we sign and complete the deal, we also said that last week and the week before, there has been another delay but we are confident; Everyone is cranky, some are unwell after a strenuous campaign, the lawyers the accountants, the tax advisor the buyer the seller. The cheques are ready, don’t have the account number for an EFT, then EFT limit is a problem, what next?

Completing our Business Sale – An Emotional Rollercoaster
Todays the day, yes, all calm, all is done, we start smiling, the mood lifts, it’s going to happen, we will be completing our business sale, I will realise my dream, a dream which seems to have faded over the past months. It is now going to be a reality, my hard work, the hours, the commitment, an emotional rollercoaster, yes it was worth it and my dreams are going to be a reality…

As the new owner steps in, documents are signed, money paid, we say “let’s get started and implement the integration plan”. “The what!!!”

Ensure that when you are divesting your business that you have suitable advise and support and can comfortably say something like “when completing our business sale, we had the right advice, an experienced team who managed the process professionally, they marketed the business to the right targets, we achieved a good deal and received a good price, we got paid. There was a sound and thoroughly developed integration plan, the buyer will look after my staff and I can comfortably leave the business and our legacy in good hands. Completing our business sale has been tough but worked well”.
